On April 24th, Pivotal had the honor of attending the annual Children’s Summit, hosted by Kids in Common, a long-time Pivotal Partner. Since 2008, this annual event has brought together over 250 cross-sector leaders in Santa Clara County (SCC) dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families for the better.

The summit focuses on racial equity and social justice, continual improvement, and successful collaboration through educational workshops and data-driven approaches. During the event, Kids in Common presented awards recognizing the impact of local programs and individuals who have made significant contributions to the well-being of children and families in our community.

The Bold Steps for Children Award was presented to the Santa Clara County Nature and Health Initiative, a program that highlights the profound health benefits of nature, particularly in fostering healthier, more resilient communities. Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, former Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools, was given the Changemaker for Children award for her outstanding leadership and dedication to improving education and services for children in our region.

Key community leaders, including State Senator Cortese, County Supervisor Ellenberg, and Former County Supervisor Chavez sent video messages of support that were shared during the event. These heartfelt messages emphasized the collective commitment and responsibility we share in advocating for the health and success of children and families in Santa Clara County.

Santa Clara County Children’s Data Book

A major focus of this year’s summit was the release of the 2025 SCC Children’s Data Book. This annual report offers a detailed and eye-opening look at the current state of children and families in the county. The Data Book serves as a critical tool for understanding where we stand and where we need to focus our efforts to ensure that every child can thrive.

Among its many insights, the Data Book underscores the long-term impact of childhood adversity, noting that “children who are victims of abuse or neglect are at higher risk of suffering from depression, attempting suicide, using alcohol and drugs, demonstrating learning and behavioral challenges in school, and becoming involved in the foster care system” (28). These sobering realities further highlight the urgency of collective, equity-centered action.

The Data Book also highlights the Bill of Rights for Children and Young Adults, which affirms that every young person must get what they need when they need it, regardless of physical, mental, or socioeconomic determinants (5). This core belief is one Pivotal holds deeply. Our daily work is rooted in the idea that equity means removing barriers and ensuring foster youth have unrestricted access to the support, resources, and opportunities they deserve.
